Some Partners check Universal Product Codes (UPCs) before they approve products. This article explains what UPCs are, how Rokt Catalog checks them, and how to add UPCs to your Shopify variants.
What is a UPC?
A Universal Product Code (UPC) is a barcode number that identifies a specific product or variant. Partners use UPCs to match product data, support inventory tracking, and confirm that the right item is listed for sale.
Before you start
- Use GS1-issued UPCs when a Partner requires them.
- Add a UPC to each listed variant you want Partners to sell.
- Do not reuse the same UPC across multiple variants.
You can use the GS1 Company Database to look up Global Trade Item Number (GTIN) or UPC details.
Add UPCs in Shopify
- In Shopify, go to Products.
- Select the product you want to update.
- In Variants, select a variant.
- In Inventory, enter the UPC in Barcode (ISBN, UPC, GTIN, etc.).
- Select Save.
What Rokt Catalog checks
For Partners with UPC validation enabled, Rokt Catalog confirms that each listed variant has a numeric 12- or 13-digit UPC or GTIN, passes the GS1 check digit, and isn't used on another variant.
If a UPC is missing, invalid, or duplicated, Rokt Catalog prevents that variant from being approved for that Partner until you update it.
If you don't want a variant to sell, pause selling or unlist the variant in Rokt Catalog.
